On Thursday, January 28, 2021, messaging giant WhatsApp has announced that they have started to roll out a new security feature for Web and Desktop: face and fingerprint unlock when linking devices.
On Facebook, the app has stated that they “want WhatsApp Web and desktop to be just as robust as our mobile apps so people can communicate privately and securely, in whatever way is best for them.”
Today we’re starting to roll out a new security feature for WhatsApp Web and Desktop: face and fingerprint unlock when linking devices.

WhatsApp added that in order to link WhatsApp Web or Desktop to WhatsApp account, users will now be asked to use their face or fingerprint unlock on their phone, before scanning a QR code from the phone to link their device.
“This builds on our existing security measures today, which pops up a notice in your phone whenever a Web/Desktop login occurs, and the ability to unlink devices from your phone at any time,” WhatsApp added.
Furthermore, the messaging app has stated that the face and fingerprint authentication takes place on the users’ device in a privacy preserving manner – by design and WhatsApp does not see the users’ face or fingerprint data.
