How To Take Stunning Sunset Photos

Again, let me just reiterate that we are not experts when it comes to photography, yes there are a lot of photographers that are much better than me in terms of composition and photo outcome. I would however want to share with you how i take cloudscapes and sunsets that others may also pick up some ideas that they can use.

I will use the photo here as an example. How did i take this sunset photo?

1. Vantage point – if you plan to take photos of sunset, you have to know where to position yourself. Which means you should know your basic navigation, where is east and where is west, in short you should know where the sun is going to set.

2. Camera – make sure that you have your camera handy, batteries charged and of course lens clean, depending on which part of the world you are, you only have a limited time to take the photo the sun sets at a constant rate, so make sure you have your camera ready and that you have your settings ready.

3. Post Processing – of course to clean up some areas in your photo that might be undesirable you might want to use post processing software, we used Adobe’s Camera Raw to conduct post processing on this photo.

Shooting cloudscapes and sunsets happens fast and since every sunset and cloudscape is unique you do not actually get to plan out how things should look like, this is where you have to also be able to quickly adjust as you compose your photos. One thing you should always remember is that shooting sunsets and cloudscapes are dependent heavily on the timing more than anything else, so it is a good time to become a skywatcher during sunset, if you intend to take breathtaking sunset and cloudscape photos.
